Popular Dog Breeds of 2021
Aussies love their dogs! According to the RSPCA, around 40% of Australian households own a dog, and we aren’t surprised! Their unconditional love, companionship and ability to make us smile even on the most challenging days make them a popular addition to any family. The events of the past two years resulted in a surge in dog ownership as more people were spending time at home and also exercising in nature.
Most dog owners will boast that they have the best breed but do they? Let’s take a look at the top ten dog breeds of 2021 as compiled by Canstar.
1. Cavoodle
Cavoodles were crowned the top dog and it’s no surprise with this hybrid breed of King Charles Cavalier and a toy poodle, rising in popularity over the last 10 years. Cavoodles are popular for their loving nature, high intelligence and endless energy!
2. French Bulldog
The French Bulldog came in second place as they are highly social dogs that make great companions and even better watchdogs. They are also known for their boundless loyalty!
3. Golden Retriever
Another popular choice, the Golden Retriever has been a family favourite for decades. Originally bred as a hunting dog, Golden Retrievers are loved for their endless energy and trademark coats.
4. Labrador
Very similar in appearance to the golden retriever, Labradors are a slightly larger build needing a lot of space to burn off their energy and entertain them as they are highly intelligent and get bored easily.
5. Border Collie
In fifth place is the classic sheepdog, another Australian family favourite! First introduced to Australia in the 1800s as working sheepdogs, the Border Collie has always been a popular choice.
6. Miniature Dachshund
A small breed with a big attitude, the miniature dachshund has a loving temperament and bright personality.
7. German Shepherd
Best described as loving and cuddly teddy bears to those that care for them, they are much less friendly to strangers! A very energetic and intelligent breed, German Shepards love to keep busy!
8. Maltese Cross
A happy breed with a big personality, a Maltese Cross is a great choice for families with kids of all ages. They are also known to socialise well with other dogs and pets in the family.
9. Staffordshire Bull Terrier
Despite outward appearances, Stafford Bull Terriers are more lovers than fighters! They are gentle, easy to care for and always looking for fun!
10. Golden Doodle (Groodle)
A newer breed, the Golden Doodle or Groodle, is a mixed breed with the Golden Retriever and Poodle. This mix has created a highly intelligent and highly independent breed that shows tolerance and loyalty to its owners. This makes them a great addition to families that have smaller children.
It’s great to see a mix of purebred and mix-breed dogs make the list! Whichever breed you buy, it’s important to remember that owning a dog is a long-term commitment, and they require ongoing care and attention throughout their lifetime.
